Do you know what a walk in clinic is? If you don’t, I don’t know where you have been living for the last 20 years. In southern California, it is one of the main ways that the average person accesses medical care. Usually, with a walk in clinic, they are covered on your insurance, even though you may have a primary care physician. See which ones are covered under your plan.
This is my usual medical experience. Aside from severe injuries or issues, our family almost always starts here. We have an issue. It could be all sorts of issues..a severe cold that we suspect is strep…a bout of insomnia….heck, my husband had a partial tear in his Achilles tendon and where did we start out? the walk in clinic. This is why. When we call our primary care physician (PCP) it may take a day or two to get an appointment. When you get an appointment it is always at some irritatingly inconvenient time and you have to drive 10 miles to get to their office. Your local walk in clinic is different. No appointment is needed and my clinic is much closer that my PCP. If your clinic takes your insurance, they can also give referrals to specialists. This is so great. The Achilles tendon issue was triaged and he was promptly referred to a specialist.
How to know if you have a great Walk In Clinic?
- Lots of Services – I mean urgent cares are always awesome but how cool is it when your urgent care offers things like weight loss options, a vitamin shot bar, aesthetic care options, and allergy testing?
- Location, location, location – you want your walk in clinic to centrally located and convenient. That is the point, right?
- Weekend hours – I always look for a clinic with hours outside my PCP
- Walk-in not “walk-in”: This may seem silly to say but you should make sure that your local clinic is, indeed, a walk in clinic. Some aren’t. You don’t want to get there and realize you needed an appointment.
If you haven’t availed yourself already, try out a walk in clinic and get your health issue taken care of quick and easy. You may change the way your family handles medicine.
